Talk: Social Movements in a Globalizing World

Hosted by SOIL Development Group Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at 12:15 PM Gates Common Room, Colorado College, Colorado Springs

Over the last few decades, social movements worldwide have played a major role in social and geopolitical shifts. From the local and national to the international arenas, from community organizing to online mobilization, global social movements are catching not just political imagination, but also research and news cycles. This talk will focus on the principles of successful social movements, both historically and at present, seen through the lenses of two renowned activists from Serbia who have worked with human rights and pro-democracy movements in 50 different countries.

Srdja Popovic and Slobodan Djinovic co-founded and run the Center for Applied Nonviolent Actions and Strategies (CANVAS), a non-profit organization based in Belgrade, Serbia that works to teach nonviolent strategies for social change. Popovic and Djinovic were co-founders of the Serbian resistance movement OTPOR! in 1998 which went on to topple the Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic through a mass nonviolent campaign. They have also been guest lecturers at Colorado College since 2008. Food will be provided. This event is co-sponsored by the SOIL Development Group and the Political Science Department.📷NOV 5
