About

What is Caucus, Assembly, and Convention?

Discover the grassroots of democracy in action! The caucus and assembly process is a fundamental aspect of the American political system, particularly within the Democratic Party. It’s where party members at the local level come together to make pivotal decisions that shape the future of their party and country.

What is Caucus?

A caucus is a local gathering of party members with the primary agenda to select delegates for the county assembly and discuss party platforms. It’s a community meeting where neighbors and members discuss candidates and party resolutions and elect precinct committee persons.

Key Points of Caucus:

  • Grassroots Engagement: Members voice their opinions and preferences for party candidates and policies.
Delegate Selection: Caucus attendees vote to select delegates who will represent their precinct at the county assembly.
Local Party Leadership: Election of precinct committee persons who will lead local party efforts.

What is Assembly?

Following the caucus, the assembly is the next level of party meetings. Here, the delegates selected during the caucus convene to vote on party candidates and resolutions.

Key Functions of Assembly:

  • Candidate Nominations: Delegates nominate and vote for candidates to appear on the primary ballot for local, state, and national offices.
  • Platform Development: Delegates discuss and vote on resolutions and the party platform, shaping the party’s stance on various issues.
  • Electing Higher-Level Delegates: Selection of delegates to attend state and national conventions.

What is Convention?

A convention is a key party meeting that follows the assembly. Delegates come together to make essential decisions for the election cycle.

Key Functions of a Convention:

Nominating Candidates: Delegates finalize candidate nominations for key offices, including presidential candidates during election years.

Adopting the Platform: The party’s platform, outlining key principles and policies, is officially adopted at the convention.

Uniting the Party: Conventions rally the party through leadership speeches and set the stage for upcoming elections.
