"Who Speaks for the Mountain West?"

A recent New York Times opinion piece asked this question, acknowledging the fact two Coloradoans have entered the 2020 Democratic Party Presidential Primary. Written by a Republican strategist, we think she missed a few things. Here's the EPCDP response we sent to the NYT, which chose not to publish our reply:

Dear NYT,

We write in gratitude for the recent piece entitled “Who Speaks for the Mountain West?” The Trump re-election claim Colorado will flip red next year is indeed “delusional.” We are proud two Colorado presidential primary candidates bring the “different philosophical outlook” inherent to the region to the race. Translation: In the Mountain West, we believe in functioning government. And, indeed, our population growth will bring political influence.

However, we submit Colorado’s blue trifecta as evidence voters granted the Democratic Party a mandate. We disagree, too, with labeling environmental concerns “the interests of stereotypical coastal city dwellers.” Colorado’s recent Public Lands Day demonstrates we deeply value the outdoors. This is why climate crisis matters to us. In fact, Americans deem climate action urgent.

Sure, the Mountain West has a different way of thinking. Really, it’s a different way of doing. Our way of life contrasts starkly with a Congress currently unable to legislate under a failed White House Administration.

The Mountain West will do our part in changing this tragedy for America. We will speak for ourselves in 2020.
